These are the seven most common questions on filling out a petition coming in on the gas tax referendum petition campaign:
- Do I have to sign as the circulator (witness) at the bottom if I am the only person signing the sheet? Yes. The person who signs as the circulator at the bottom is testifying that they are witness to every name on the that particular petition sheet, and it must be signed even if you are the only person signing the sheet. (see red area on graphic above)
- Can I both sign the sheet and be a circulator, or do I need to get another circulator? We get this question a lot. And yes, a person can both sign above and be their own circulator. (see red area on graphic above)
- Why does the box say “some circulators are being paid” when I am not being paid, should I cross it out? No. The some circulator box is just an Elections Office label on the petition notifying everyone that the this petition drive includes both paid and unpaid. It does not imply that the person is being paid. (see yellow area on graphic above)
- Can I copy petitions? Please do not. Petitions must be on a certain type of paper and approved weight. One mistake, copied over time, will invalidate every copied petition and all the names gathered on it.
- What if someone signs the petition and makes a mistake, what do I do? If a person signs the petition and makes a mistake, the person can simply cross out their error and re-start on another line. If someone was not an Oregon voter or some other disqualifying factor, their name can also be crossed out as a fix to the error.
- What if someone signs their name on the printed area and prints in the signed area? This is not a disqualifying factor. As long as it is obvious who the person is, and where their printed name is and where their signed name is, it should not be a problem. (see blue area on graphic above)
- Do I fill in the sheet number on the bottom right hand of the petition? No. This is for office use. (see green area on graphic above)
- When is the deadline? All petitions must be returned in the mail by December 20th for this particular state referendum drive.
