Many lawmakers showed up to testify against the bill (Sen. Drazan, Rep. Diehl, Rep. E. Werner Reschke, Rep. Boice, Rep. Yunker) but we did not see any lawmakers during our review who showed up to support the bill. That means liberal lawmakers are willing to violate the will of voters but not willing to show up to make their case. Very sad.
A county transportation representative testified in favor of the bill. He said ODOT was caught of guard by the rise in inflation and therefore everyone needs a big gas tax increase. Soon after, a citizen named Brad Dennis followed up by saying it was ODOT that wanted and implemented prevailing wage laws which are designed to increase the labor cost of a project. Add to that, the Governor’s Project Labor Agreement Executive Order which aims to needlessly raise labor costs even higher.
A self-labeled “transportation justice” person testified and said in effect, that the election date had to be moved up to May in order to prevent people from dying. Oregon’s transportation agency spends more per-capita than California, Nevada, Utah and Washington for their roads. This means that liberals are saying if we just spend what other states spend then people will die — that looks foolish.
As of the hearing afternoon there were 3,408 people who submitted online opposition testimony. 24 people submitted support.
