Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed the massive gas tax at the last minute. Kotek signed it on late Friday (November 7) and didn’t tell anyone, knowing that no one would know until Monday morning. This way, Kotek can say she she didn’t wait until the last minute (Wednesday Nov 12th) but in reality she did.
Now that the gas tax is signed, there is a 2-3 day paperwork delay before the Right to Vote on the Gas Tax team (Senator Bruce Starr, Representative Ed Diehl, Jason Williams, Taxpayers Association of Oregon) can start circulating petitions in a referendum drive. It takes time for the State to approve the PAC and official petition documents. Also, Tuesday is a Federal Holiday. This means that petitions could be ready by Wednesday November 12th or Thursday November 13th. Under an “everything-goes-perfectly” scenario, there could be a chance that petitions will be approved at close of business day Monday — but unlikely. The team is practically camping outside the Elections Office to speed things up as humanly possible.
Stay tuned for more details.
