Oregon Governor Tina Kotek once called the $4.3 billion gas tax an emergency urgent matter that required forcing the entire Legislative body to cancel their Labor Day weekend plans in order to have a rushed Session to vote for her tax bill HB 3991. During that weekend, that Kotek forced lawmakers to attend and pass her bill, she herself did not interrupt her vacation plans to speak at the gas tax bill public hearing to make the case for her own bill. The gas tax was passed by the Legislature on September 30th.
The Taxpayers Association’s Jason Williams, and State Senator Bruce Starr and State Representative Ed Diehl are chief petitioners on a petition referendum campaign to stop the gas tax by forcing a statewide public vote. Yet, we cannot start until Kotek signs the bill. The longer Kotek delays, the shorter-time citizens have to circulate the petition.
With the bill on her desk, Kotek has now left the state on a $200,000 taxpayer-paid travel junket to Japan and South Korea. So, the Taxpayers Association of Oregon decided to make full use of her long trip by sending her the gas tax bill to veto or sign*. We sent the gas tax bill to the American embassy in Japan to pass along to Oregon’s wayward Governor when they see her. With 10-hour long flights across the Pacific, Kotek surely has 60-seconds to sign her own bill that she forced lawmakers to cancel their family vacation over.
Since Kotek’s Japan/Korea trip is costing taxpayers $200,000, surely this trip is considered a work trip on work time. Kotek should be doing work.
